"The outcome of Turn 1-2 is not good for the team," admits Fred Vasseur as Ferrari tensions rise.

Not for the first time, a team's decision to celebrate its past backfired, as Ferrari became bit players on a day they had the potential to be the stars.

Lewis Hamilton was so confident that victory was achievable he brought his 'lucky dust' mother along, while Charles Leclerc also opined that victory was possible.

Yet, in many ways it was over by the end of the first lap, and it was Kimi Antonelli who was lauded by the tifosi later in the afternoon.

Although Leclerc's race ended when he crashed at the Parabolica (again), unhappy with his final set of tyres, teammate Hamilton struggled home in sixth.

However, the Maranello outfit's hopes effectively ended on the opening lap at the first chicane. The pair went through wheel-to-wheel, and in an incident which has divided public opinion, and even saw Nico Rosberg defend his former teammate, Hamilton was forced wide losing five places in the process, while his teammate crashed out on the following lap.

"Charles pushed me off," claimed the seven-time world champion.

"With Lewis it was a way too close into Turn 1 and unfortunately in Turn 2," Leclerc subsequently explained, "I don't know if we had contact or whatever.

"I was quite a lot on the inside curve and tried to make the corner, which I didn't do it tight enough," he continued, "and then I obviously only saw in the mirrors what happened which is never what you want between two cars, between two cars of the same team.

"Here it's true, though, that we went too far, I think, with Lewis in Turn 1," the Monegasque subsequently admitted. "Then in Turn 2 I tried to do the tightest corner possible, but that was just not enough, and doing it here is not good."

"I was ahead in Turn 2, by the apex, I was ahead," insisted Hamilton. "There was no 'we' in it.

"We will take it offline and talk about it," he added, ominously.

"I think it comes down to rules of engagement," said the Briton. "When I was at Mercedes, we had written rules of engagement. We never really, really had it too bad.

"There was a moment between me and Nico a couple of times," he admitted, "but more often not, it was good.

"Here, there are no rules. We need to address that. It was very bad for the team, and obviously it put us way back in positions.

"I just tried to reset, I was like, 'okay, I'll try and catch up, and then obviously we had to stop. I think I put the wrong tyres on, probably."

"I spoke to Lewis for two seconds and not at all with Charles," said Vasseur post-race. "We'll have time to discuss that.

"I prefer to discuss with them first and not with you," he told the assembled reporters. "For sure, the outcome of Turn 1-2 is not good for the team, if it's the question."

That was indeed the question, however another question is whether the Italian team needs to use team orders.

"To see if we need to have a team order or whatever, I think that the good comparison that I made was that last year," said the Frenchman. "Piastri was leading McLaren at this stage of the season and if McLaren put everything on Piastri, Max Verstappen would have been champion.

"For sure, at one stage you have to take a decision," he continued, "but I think it was too early to take a decision before Monza. Now I will have time to discuss with the guys.

"For a team, it's never good to lose points. This is clear. Now, basically at the beginning of the season, I think every single team principal in the world would love to let them race.

"To freeze positions when you are the team principal, don't imagine that it's an easy choice. You do it for the team, you do it for the results at the end, but it's never an easy call.

"By definition, I would love to let them race all the weekend," said the Frenchman. "Now, by reason, you have to take a decision at one stage. Each team is different. We will have to take a decision when we'll decide."
